Autor: Patrick Chojnowski, Johann Reinhardt

Aino-Kaisa Saarinen is the last of three cross-country skiers in our series at this weekend interviewed by LiVE-Wintersport. The Finnish won her first world cup race at Holmenkollen over the 30km distance and was together with her compatriot Virpi Sarasvuo one of the most important cross-country skiers in the last years, especially in the classic technique. Her biggest career success until now was when she won three gold medals at the worlds in Liberec in 2009. Which of her medals is the most important and which experiences she had at the Olympics in Vancouver she tells to LiVE-Wintersport.

Which experiences did you have at the Olympic Games in Vancouver in your competitions?
It was a great experience - as the Olympic Games always are. There were really various, many kinds of conditions on cross-country ski events.

Which impression did you have of the Olympic Village?

I liked it there. I have nothing to complain about it, it was very fine :)

What experiences did you have in your free time at the Olympics in Canada?
I didn't really have any free time. Would have been nice to make a visit to Vancouver, but I had no time. I went to visit Whistler downtown twice that was about it. Otherwise I was competing, training and travelling between the venues - doing my work.

Which goals do you have for the next season?
The big goal is Oslo World Championships and there 10 km classic. That is the most important event.

What does your training consist of in summer and autumn before the first world cup competitions start?
Cross-country skiing on glacier, rollerskiing, running, strength training at gym, mountain biking.

Did you test something new in training or did you change your training somehow? The Olympic season is finished and a new four year-cycle has begun.
No - I have found a training system which works for me so I follow that.

Cross-country is a traditional sport with individual races. Now, there are a lot of competitions held in mass starts such as race stages. What is your opinion about the new types of competitions and which of them do you like or even prefer?
I prefer individual races with interval starts! I would love to see them more in calendar. Mass starts are more risky for accidents.

You won your first world cup in Oslo. The Holmenkollen world cup over 30km in the classic technique is a traditional race. Which memories do you have looking back on this event/day? Have you already thought that you can win this event before the world cup race?

Great memories of course. It is a legendary place, legendary 30 km, and I believe those positive memories and experiences can benefit me next season :) Before the race on that day I didn't think I can win, I just had thought how great it would be to win 30 km at Holmenkollen someday. But, on that given day, everything just worked.

Moreover you won four gold medals at world championships and three bronze medals at the Olympics. Which medal is the most important one and why? Which race was the most peculiar?
The gold medal from Liberec 10km is the most important - I wanted to win that race and I did it.

As a rule you are better in the classic technique than in skating, at least with regards to your results up to now. Which differences are there in the training between the both techniques and what is the difficulty to be in both techniques on a high level?
It is challenging but it is not impossible. If you are on really good shape, both techniques go. In my training those are 50-50%.

What is your role in the finish world cup team after the retirement of Virpi Sarasvuo (Kuitunen)? You are actually predestined for a leading role.

That can be so. But, I think I grew up to this role during the past two years so it didn't come out of sudden. We have a great time.
