Info: Weitere Sportlerinterviews und Terminplan
Autor: Patrick Chojnowski, Johann Reinhardt

The Swedish cross-country-skier and sprint specialist Jesper Modin was available for an interview with our LiVE-Wintersport website. After his good results at the junior world championships 2007 in Tarvisio he made his debut in the worldcup in the same year. After the 22-year old had earned several top ten results he reached his first place on the podium in 2009/2010 at the world cup sprint in Rogla. Moreover he took part in the Olympic Games in Canada. Apart from his experiences there the two metre tall athlete talks to us about his future, his goals as far as distance is concerned as well as about the comparison to shooting star Emil Jönsson.

Which experiences did you have at the Olympic Games in Vancouver in your competitions?
The competition was a kind of disappointment. I had hoped for a better result than an 18th place, but I was sick just before the competitions, so my shape was not so good. For being my first Olympics the result was ok.

Which impression did you have of the Olympic Village?
The Olympic Village was very nice! It was fun to live together with all the other athletes! The accommodation was good and the food was excellent, with plenty of dishes to choose between!

What experiences did you have in your free time at the Olympics in Canada?
I didn't have so much free time, but I visited Whistler a couple of times, and it was a nice little village. I was impressed by the atmosphere and the mood in the village, and in whole Canada. It was always on top!

Which goals do you have for the next season?
My goal is of course the World Championship in Holmenkollen. Then I hope my shape will be on top! My main goal is the individual sprint, but I would really like to race the team sprint as well, but the competition about the two places is hard!
In the world cup I would really like to get some more podium places, and I think my biggest chance is in the classic sprints.

What does your training consist of in summer and autumn before the first world cup competitions start?
It's a combination of roller skiing, running and strength training, and some bicycling. As nearer you get to the competitions it's more and more intense training.

You are a very good sprinter. What is different between your summer training and the summer training of an athlete which starts over longer distances?
It's actually about the same. We both want to improve our endurance, because you have to be on top in 4 races during a sprint competition. You need almost the same endurance as in longer distances, and it's not enough just to be fast in 100 meter.

Did you test something new in training or did you change your training somehow?
The Olympic season is finished and a new four year-cycle has begun.
I'm still quite young so I'm following the same strategy as I've always had, because I think it has helped me to take steps for every year. When I get older or maybe stop in my evolution it can be good to evaluate the training and make some changes.
But for this season I have focus on the free technique because the sprint in Holmenkollen is in that technique.

What happened that you started cross-country skiing?
I started skiing when I was five years old, and I'm continuing today of the same reason; because it's fun!

Emil Jönsson is only three years older than you. Do you think that you could be able to be as strong as him in the future? Is he sometimes a kind of role model for you?
Yes, Emil is a very good team mate to have in the national team. I've a lot to learn from him, and hopefully I can be as good as him in the future. It's absolutely possible!

Do you want to compete on more distance world cups in the future? Why are the sprinters not able to be successful on the distance events, as well?
Absolutely, I would like to compete in longer distances as well, but it takes often more training and endurance to be good in longer distances, and that takes time. It takes often a longer time to become a good distance skier than a sprint skier, but my goal is of course to be as good in both disciplines, but so far I’ve succeeded best at the sprint competitions.
Some sprinters are actually also good distance skiers, but not all have the physical qualifications that are required to be good in both disciplines. But look for example on Emil Jönsson, I think he also will take big leaps in distance skiing the upcoming season.
