Info: Weitere Sportlerinterviews und Terminplan
Autor: Patrick Chojnowski

The alpine ski racer Carolina Ruiz Castillo has been the only Spanish World Cup participant who was able to gain World Cup points regularly, after the injury of her compatriot Maria Jose Rienda. In past years she always kept her position in the world ranking amongst the first 30. In her interview with Live-Wintersport she talks about her season, the small Spanish team as well as about her goals for the coming season.

Your best result in the past season was the downhill of Cortina d’Ampezzo where you came 7th. Apart from that you didn’t succeed to be in the top 10 anymore at the World Cup. Nevertheless you were able to keep her position amongst the first 30 in the world ranking. Which conclusions do you draw from the season 2008/2009?

It was a very hard season and I would have liked to get more results on the top 10 but even so I am pleased to be on top 30 in two disciplines in a relatively short time I have been running speed disciplines.

At the World Championships in Val d’Isère you came 14th in the Super-G, whereas in the downhill it didn’t go so well and you came 19th. How satisfied are you with your performance in France?

On Super-G I was very motivated but a big mistake in the first part of the race made me lose a lot of time and reach only 14, not very satisfied because I expected a better result. On Downhill was a very hard track that could not express the maximum and I could not enjoy it.

With a comparatively small team, the Spanish cannot be compared to the best teams of the world. Nevertheless you regularly succeed to keep up with the best during the World Cups. How difficult is the situation in the Spanish team? After all, it is hard to assess where one is standing.

The bigger difficulty of Spain is that we do not have many runners, and speed I'm by myself, but they give me the chance to have a great team working with me. During training in the summer I always have to add to other big teams like America, Canada or France

What is your impression of the Spanish up and coming athletes? Is there going to be someone who can take over your role when you and Maria Jose Rienda are not participating at the World Cup anymore?

It's difficult but there are some very talented young runners, I think that it will be easier to see them in technical disciplines that speed.

A couple of years ago, your strengths could be seen very clearly in the giant slalom. In this discipline you even came among the first 3 in the World Cup, the only time so far. How come you are mainly focused on speed disciplines now?

After an injury in 2003, I started running more SG and my results were better than on GS so little by little I was focusing more on speed disciplines. And I liked it, because it never had done any Spanish.

Next year you probably will participate in the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. These would be your third Olympic Games already. What are your goals for the coming season with reference to Olympia and also the World Cup?

I think I have accumulated a great experience and I hope to work hard and well this summer to get to the Olympics in the best condition to try to get a medal.

What will the coming weeks and months look like for you? Will you join other national teams’ trainings in their preparations?

In May we have two weeks of training at my home Sierra Nevada, with the English Chemmy Alcott and in June we will go to some glaciers in France and then in August we probably go to Chile with other teams.

Live-Wintersport would like to thank you very much and wishes you good health and a successful preparation for the next season.
